Wax pastel, acrylic and oil pigment stick on canvas, Tasmanian oak, MDF board, house paint
Bespoke hand-painted frame
About this work
This diptych examines the evolving relationship between material, surface, and body. On the first panel, oil pigment stick has been gently rubbed onto the top of wax pastel, revealing an ethereal dialogue between the surface and the material. On the second panel, a layer of pigment has been scraped away, exposing traces of what lies beneath. Together, the surfaces shift between presence and disappearance, matte and luminous, smooth and raw, as I aim to reveal the quiet tension between material persistence and bodily vulnerability.
Edges and transitional zones are vital: where one hue meets another, where painting and frame converge, or where painting and space intersect, boundaries become blurred and new spatial relationships emerge. These transitional areas embody the energy of transformation—simultaneously shaping and dissolving form.
This work is from the Untitled (Becoming) series, exhibited at Brunswick Street Gallery in 2026.
